Alta Vista

Bordered by Riverside and Smyth to the north, Bank Street to the west, Heron Road to the south and St. Laurent to the east, Alta Vista is the closest “suburb” to downtown and encapsulates a range of neighbourhoods within its boundaries. At the center of the area is the Ottawa Hospital, General campus including CHEO. Easy access to downtown arteries and the 417 as well as a number of good schools ensure that this primarily 1950’s neighbourhood continues to thrive. The north end of Alta Vista is a stone’s throw across the river to Old Ottawa South and offers significantly larger lot sizes for your housing investment.

Alta Vista sits on a rise above the Rideau River and is so named due to the area’s relative height. It is a very residential area with abundant green space and a strong community. Although it was officially annexed byt the City in 1950, the farmers in the area were selling off lots prior to then and the streets we know today were developing since the earlier part of the century. There were several developers over the years who focused on specific neighbourhoods (Campeau and Garand for instance) and plenty of mid-century modern homes. Some of the Alta Vista neighbourhoods include Applewood Acres and Faircrest Heights, and Guildwood Estates among others, as well as Elmvale Acres at the eastern end.
