Green Thumbs Up: Ready, Set, Plant!

Time to Start Thinking!

Ready, Set, Plant! With the amount of snow still on the ground and yet another snowfall warning looming, I know starting your garden may be the farthest thing from your mind, but believe or not the time to start your vegetables indoors will be soon upon us. In fact for vegetables like bell peppers and celery and herbs such as oregano, thyme and rosemary they should be started inside by March 3rd!

What you Need to Know?

The following tables from the Farmer’s Almanac is a great guide. It assumes that on average, your last spring frost occurs on May 13

Online you will find countless ways to make “cheap” indoor greenhouses using cabinets, old doors and windows, etc., but the cheapest and easiest idea is simply saving your cardboard egg cartons, fill each depression with soil or soilless mix, plant seeds, moisten and cover with plastic wrap, place in a sunny location and watch for your summer and fall harvest to start to emerge.  With the cost of food continuing to rise, I for one will be exercising my green thumb this year with the hopes of maybe growing enough to freeze some.
