All schools are not created equal. But then again, neither are children! The key to making the right choices for your child’s education is to consider both the institution itself and the character of your child to make sure the two mesh. Attending the school information sessions is a great way to start, especially if you are considering more than one school. The comparison becomes easier and the differences very apparent. Visiting the school provides a good sense of the overall environment: Do the teachers and students seem happy to be there? Is there a diverse student body? At the older ages, are students coming in from multiple schools, or are they all travelling together? Sometimes it can be challenging for new students to find friends if cliques are strong. Talking to the parents of students already in attendance is also a great way to gather information. Be sure to listen to more than a few opinions, and remember that every child has different needs and different experiences in the same environment. Finally, know your child. Talk to them about what is important to them – maybe it’s staying with friends, or maybe it’s meeting new ones. Maybe it’s walking to school or certain extra-curricular activities. What your child has to say is important, so be sure to listen.
We have many quality schools in Ottawa, both big and small. Do your research to find out which one is right for you because they all have something unique to offer, even if it isn’t apparent on the surface.
