When buying a home, especially when you’re looking in established urban neighbourhoods, it’s really important to look at the property for more than just the house. Trees are beautiful in an urban landscape and in Ottawa we’re really lucky to have a great variety of majestic ones. When considering a property to purchase, take a few minutes to look around at the trees. Try and find out either from the owner or from the City of Ottawa who owns the tree. If the tree is owned by the City, it will likely be their responsibility to take care of it. If it’s on private property, the owner is responsible. You’ll want to be sure that the tree is healthy. Trees that are not healthy can be dangerous and if one needs to be removed, it can cost thousands of dollars. Also, don’t forget if there is a tree you don’t like, it’s not always simple to take it down, even if it’s on your property.
